Student Identity

Pace Abroad recognizes and supports a diverse student population on its study abroad programs. Matters of personal identity can impact all students on a study abroad program. For some, it may be the first time you are a minority in your community. For others, you might notice you are getting attention based on your identity either in a positive or negative way. It is important to remember that you have control over your response to these situations.

We encourage you to research social and cultural norms as well as local customs before choosing your program. Ask yourself questions like "What stereotypes about my identity are there in the country that I am going to? How much of my identity do I plan on sharing with others while abroad? Are there cultural norms and/or laws that could affect my safety with regards to expressing my identity abroad? What resources are available abroad related to my identity?"

You will want to participate as much as possible in the host culture and should be prepared for the experience, which can be both personally challenging and rewarding. Please consult the following resources as you consider and prepare for your experience abroad.
